Early in the evening you will arrive in this small province village, where you spend the night in a hotel. The next couple of days you will travel through the southern part of Orissa, along several Adivasis of this area. Adivasis are the castless tribes, who have been living in the mountains of Orissa for ages. There is a great diversity between the different tribes.
Day 2 Rayagada / visit village Saura tribe
You will start with a fascinating journey along the many tribes of Orissa. The village of the Saura tribes will be one of the places you visit today. The Saura tribe is known for its beautiful wall-paintings in the villages (itddal). You won't see these wall-paintings at the other tribes.
Day 3 Rayagada / visit Desia Khond and Dunguria tribes
Today you will meet the Desia Khond tribe. The Desia Khondh are among the tribes that speak a dravidic language. They are one of the few tribes in Orissa with tattoos on their faces.
You will visit a weekly market (hate) of the Desia Dog. In Orissa the best way to see the many population groups is to visit the weekly markets. During these weekly markets the tribes come together. Often they spend hours from their village to the market to buy and sell. You will also visit a village of the Desia Khond. You have lunch at a waterfall and then visit a village of the Dhunguria dog. You walk in an hour or two to their village and visit the village. A beautiful environment of hills, rice fields and fruit tree plantations. The Dunguria Dog wear white robes and lots of jewelry in their hair. The villages are very primitive. In the center of the village is the village god who symbolizes earth and sky. The Dhunguria wear special scarves that symbolize love and brotherhood. At the end of the afternoon you will return to Rayagada.
Day 4 Rayagada - Jeypore via Chatikona
You drive to Chatikona to see the weekly market of the Dhunguria Khond tribes. A small market along the railway line. Everywhere from the hills you can see the tribes dressed in white robes coming to the market. Products such as bananas, papaya's and pineapples are sold, but also clothing, rice, kerosene, dry fish, etc.
In the afternoon you will visit a village of the Bhudda Khondh. Then you drive to the town of Jeypore, which has a typical Indian streetscene. Here you will spend the night in a hotel again.
Day 5 Jeypore / visit Bonda market
Orissa, those of the Bonda tribes in Onkadeli. Of all the people in Orissa, the Bonda's appeal most to the imagination. The women are dressed in a small skirt and cover their bodies with an enormous amount of necklaces. They wear large silver necklaces and earrings and other jewelry. The men are dressed very simply and still wear bow and arrow. From far and wide they come to the market to sell various drinks such as palm wine and rice wine. You can see the men with large jugs come running, the women carry jugs on their heads.
The market starts quietly, but becomes increasingly noisy as more alcohol is sold and drunk. The women all sit in a row with large gourds with palm wine and rice wine in front of them. The wine is directly drunk with round wooden spoons. Not only the Bonda's, but also other tribes like the Gadaba and Paraja visit the market. The whole makes an impression that is more reminiscent of tribes in Africa than Asia. In the afternoon you will visit some villages of the Gadaba and Paraja tribes. You can also relax at a waterfall with a beautiful view of the meadow surroundings. In the evening you will return to your hotel in Jeypore.
Day 6 Jeypore / visit Khunduli market, Jagganath temple and museum
In the morning you will visit the weekly market of Kundli. This is the largest tribal market where especially Paraja and Mali tribes come to buy and sell their goods. In the afternoon you will visit the town of Koraput where you can visit the Jagannath temple and the Tribal Museum.
You will spend the night in Jeypore again.
Day 7 Jeypore – Rayagada via Gupteshwar and Dhuruva tribes
You drive to Gupteshwar. This town is beautifully situated in a wooded area by the river, which forms the border between the states of Orissa and Chhatisgarh. Near the river there is a Shiva temple, hidden in the caves. The many underground rock formations contain many myths and legends. Many pilgrims come here and take a ritual bath in the river. The Dhuruva tribes live in the forests and fields around Gupteshwar. The Dhuruva also live very primitive. The women make their own little hair combs, which are worn as jewelry. The Dhuru Shore Tribes meet at the market of Baligaon. There is also a large weekly market.
You will spend the night in Rayagada.
Day 8 Jeypore – Taptapani
On the way to Taptapani you will visit some more villages. It is also possible to visit a village of Tibetan refugees and an associated Tibetan monastery. After about seven hours of travelling you will arrive at the hot springs of Taptapani where you will spend the night.
Day 9 Taptapani - Puri
Today you will drive along the coast towards Puri, one of the holiest cities in India is Puri. Here is the Jagannath Mandir temple, a temple that every Hindu must have ever visited. The temple is dedicated to the god Jagannath, a reincarnation of Vishnu and Lord of the Universe. Once a year the god is driven out of the temple, during the famous Rath Yatra festival. As non-hindus we are not allowed to visit the temple itself, but we can visit the surroundings and take a walk through the old city. Puri's streetscape is India at its best. Everywhere people, rickshaws, holy cows, cars, street vendors, beggars, shops, smells, colors, noise, in short; a colorful hectic that can also be nerve wrecking. Luckily Puri is situated on the beach and we can look for the peace and quiet of the Indian Ocean. We spend the night in a good hotel on the beach, so you can recover from the trip the past few days and take a dip in the sea or the swimming pool. Lovers can take a trip or a walk along the beach to a nearby fishing village. Very nice to visit, especially when the fish is brought in in the afternoon. Puri is also known for its ayurvedic massages. Through our local agent you can get a short or long ayurvedic treatment by specially trained people. This way you will get home really relaxed.
Day 10 Puri / excursion Konark
In the morning you can relax on the beach or explore the streets of Puri. In the afternoon you will make an excursion to Konark, where the most famous temple of Orissa is located. It is not for nothing that the sun temple is a Unesco World Heritage Site and one of the most beautiful temple complexes in India. The temple was built in the 13th century, then still situated on the coast. The coast has retreated a little. The temple is built in the shape of a large car with 24 gigantic wheels. The wagon had to pull the sun god Surya. The whole temple is covered with sculptures. You will see scenes from everyday life, gods, musicians, but the temple is known for its many erotic sculptures, in which the most daring and athletically challenging positions are assumed.
Day 11 depart Puri
You will be taken to Bubaneshwar, the capital of Orissa. From here you can travel by train or plane to other destinations in India.
